Video Shows How Golden Retrievers Uniquely Demand Attention

Golden Retrievers might be the poster dogs for family pets, but don’t let the golden coats fool you. They come with an invisible warning label of having no regard for personal space. A recent video on Instagram hilariously drives the point home, and Golden owners everywhere nod in solidarity in the comments.

Instagram video shows needy Golden Retrievers wanting attention

Golden Retrievers Gamja and Chip have built a loyal fan base online. A recent video on their Instagram account @gamjamypotato shows why. Shared two days ago, the reel is already making waves for its relatable take on Golden Retriever behavior.

It opens with a text overlay, “Don’t get a Golden if you aren’t ready to give….” It is paired with a voiceover, “I like…”. As the video continues, both the audio and text overlay escalate to repeat, “Attention… attention… attention… more attention… attention now please.” Each phrase matches a new clip of either Gamja or Chip doing whatever it takes to interrupt their owner’s day.

Whether their human is working on a laptop or scrolling on the phone, one of the dogs is always there, nudging or leaning in. Their tactics vary, but the goal is always the same: get noticed, get petted, and don’t be ignored. One funny clip shows the dog repeatedly tapping the owner’s hand with their paw, as if saying, “Pet me now human!”

Golden Retrievers are often called “Velcro dogs,” a term used to describe breeds that stick to their humans. This is partly due to their history as working dogs bred for companionship and cooperation. They form deep bonds with their families and feel most secure when they’re close by.

This may make them incredibly loving pets. Nevertheless, it means they thrive on interaction and can become anxious if left alone too long. So if you’re thinking about bringing a Golden into your home, be prepared to share your time, your personal space, and more often than not, your seat on the couch.
