A 2-year-old dog named Twiggy has become a symbol of resilience after being shot and making an extraordinary recovery from severe injuries that would have defeated most. Her incredible story began when she was rescued by the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) following a negotiated release on November 4.
Dog recovers after getting bullet stuck in its jaw
Twiggy’s condition upon arrival at HSNT was alarming. She was noticeably frail, plagued by fleas and parasites, and afflicted with heartworms and whipworms. Despite her “heartbreaking” physical state, Twiggy’s spirit was unbroken. During her initial examination, the medical team at HSNT noticed swelling under her jaw. Although there were no visible wounds, the swelling hinted at a more severe problem.
Unfortunately, Twiggy was battling a severe upper respiratory infection at the time. This condition prevented her from being sedated immediately for further examination. Instead, the team started her on antibiotics and closely supervised her as her weak body began to recover.
Once Twiggy regained enough strength to undergo sedation, radiographs revealed a shocking discovery. A bullet and a tooth fragment were embedded in her jaw, likely causing her immense pain for weeks, if not months. The revelation of this hidden trauma intensified the urgency of her situation. However, the veterinary team at HSNT rose to the occasion as they surgically removed the bullet and tooth fragment. This procedure provided Twiggy with much-needed relief, marking a critical turning point in her journey to recovery.
“Throughout her recovery, Twiggy has shown nothing but love and gratitude,” said the organization. Her unshaken trust in humans, even after her traumatic past, quickly made her a favorite among the HSNT staff. As her condition improved, Twiggy began to heal not only physically but emotionally as well. Now, with “a second chance at life,” she eagerly waits for a family who will truly cherish her.
