According to ABC News, the attack happened on Wednesday, Mar. 13. East Hartford police responded to the victim’s residence shortly after 3 p.m. after receiving reports of the injured child being attacked while on a trampoline by a “larger, mixed breed dog.”

The boy was rushed to hospital, and unfortunately, did not make it. Police revealed the child’s mother suffered minor injuries from the attack.

As per NBC News reports, the family had two Pit Bulls; one of the dogs was behind the attack. According to the distraught family, the animal had never displayed any aggression before.

“If the dog would have been aggressive or anything like that, trust and believe he wouldn’t have been around the baby,” Ricky Rohena, the child’s father, shared. Rohena also expressed regret for leaving the dogs outside that day.

“I just didn’t get the chance to hold my baby at all. I didn’t get the chance to see him,” a heartbroken Rohena, who was at work at the time of the attack, stated. Rohena said he “took the dogs out” before work, but wishes he “never left them outside.”

A neighbor told the news outlet he heard screams coming from the victim’s residence and rushed to help.

“I tried to fight off two Pit Bulls and help the baby as much as I could,” Rohan Green, the neighbor, narrated. “One minute seemed like forever. [It was] a long battle.”

Following the attack, authorities seized both animals from the residence. This tragic incident comes barely a week after a New Jersey family dog mauled a 3-month-old baby to death.
