Cane Corso Caught After Year With Box Stuck on His Head

For a year, the infamous Cane Corso “dog with a box on his head” eluded capture in Alabama. However, the canine has now been captured and is currently under the care of the City of Mobile Animal Shelter. In January 2023, the story first circulated in the news, with people who had witnessed the dog worrying for their well-being.

Animal shelter employees removed box from head of Cane Corso named ‘Bear’ after a year of trying

The famous “dog with a box on his head” has finally been captured after a year, as News 5 reports. The Cane Corso is now living at the City of Mobile Animal Shelter. Individuals passing by the James T. Strickland Youth Center often observed the dog and expressed concern for the canine’s safety.

As per sources, the dog called Bear used to wander the area for several months. They had an object on their head, referred to as a box for convenience. In addition, the dog managed to consume food and water, as their survival would have been unlikely otherwise.

Nonetheless, the situation sparked concerns and the Animal Services Department expressed difficulty in approaching the animal to remove the box.

Food-based traps also proved ineffective because the Cane Corso seemed to be well-fed.

A breakthrough occurred on Wednesday, Feb. 21, when the animal shelter successfully approached the dog and removed the box. However, Bear ran away before they could catch him.

Nevertheless, the authorities were able to examine the box. Robert Bryant, the City of Mobile Animal Services (COMAS) Director, described the “box” in an interview. “The best way to describe it is the top of a trash can like a public trash can that you would see out on the street or in a fast food restaurant,” he said.

Thankfully, COMAS announced on Facebook on Feb. 26 that Bear is now safe and secure. In the post, they shared, “Bear has made it to COMAS! … [Bear] was caught by our Animal Control Officers over the weekend.” The post also stated that the dog is doing well.
