San Diego Humane Rescues Dog From Canyon

An 8-year-old dog is lucky to be alive after rescuers from the San Diego Humane Society saved him from a 30-foot-deep Canyon in Mission Heights. The harrowing experience turned into a happy ending, all thanks to the team.

Dog rescued by San Diego Humane Team

On Feb. 14 shortly after 5:30 p.m., the San Diego Humane Society responded to reports of a large Labrador-Pit Bull Terrier Mix running aimlessly in a parking lot in Mission Heights. Fox5 San Diego reports that the dog was acting aggressively, including growling at those who tried to approach him.

San Diego Humane Law Enforcement arrived at the reported area, only to find the dog had fallen into a deep Canyon nearby. Officers determined there was the need for a technical rescue, and so they called the Humane Society Emergency Response Team to the scene.

The seven-member team retrieved the stranded pup from the Canyon. Thereafter, they took him to the Humane Society San Diego campus for medical evaluation. It’s unclear whether the dog sustained injuries from the fall.

Since he did not have a microchip, the Humane Society placed him on stray hold for 72 hours.

When a stray hold period lapses, it’s assumed that the dog found as a stray doesn’t have an owner. The dog, therefore, becomes the “property” of the animal shelter. This means the shelter can put the dog up for adoption if they see fit.

Thankfully, there are no confirmed reports of anyone attacked by the aggressive canine as he roamed in the parking lot.

It’s worth noting dogs display aggressive behaviors in response to an underlying issue. For instance: a health problem causing them pain, frustration arising from the lack of a mating partner, particularly for unneutered and unspayed dogs, and unresolved behavioral problems like fear and separation anxiety, which can make a dog resort to aggression as a self-defense mechanism.
