It’s no secret that shelter dogs have it “ruff.” Dogs often feel anxious or depressed in shelter environments, even if staff and volunteers work hard to keep them engaged. There’s just no replacement for the one-on-one affection dogs crave. One shelter is pleading for one of its longtime residents, an abandoned Pit Bull named Perez, to find a home before he spends another year in a kennel.

Abandoned Pit Bull Spends Almost 2 Years at Shelter

Perez is a 2 1/2-year-old pup who resides in the Florence Area Humane Society, a South Carolina animal shelter. Perez has been there for 660 days, almost his entire life.

“This is a summary of Perez’s life so far… as a puppy he was thrown from a moving vehicle on Freedom Boulevard. He has been at the shelter ever since (660 days and nights). THAT has been poor Perez’s life… abuse, neglect, trauma, and confinement. And THAT is a pattern we are all too familiar with. We must do better! Please help us turn things around for this sweet and loving boy and find him a caring home,” the shelter wrote on social media. “Please help us get him out of the shelter where he can be the dog he has waited so long to be!”

The shelter believes Perez would be a good match for someone with an active lifestyle that loves play and interaction with their dog. Those who think Perez might be a good addition to their family can apply to adopt the dog on Florence Area Humane Society’s website.

Why Adoption Matters

Many adoption advocates have reiterated for many years that adopted dogs seem “grateful,” or seem to have an understanding that they were rescued. Many more people can attest to how miserable many animals seem in shelter environments. New evidence corroborates what many animal trainers and other professionals have been saying for years. Researchers found that many abandoned dogs suffer symptoms of trauma and PTSD. Adopting a dog truly does change their life and offers them a second chance.
