You can’t throw a tennis ball these days without hitting someone who has a story about reuniting with a missing dog no matter how many years have passed and how many miles have come between them. Such is the case with a surrendered dog who will soon be reunited with his former Florida family after surviving a car accident in New York.

A Happy Accident

Cubby is an 8-year-old mixed-breed pup who was surrendered to a shelter in the Sunshine State in early 2019 because his family was moving to Japan for a work assignment. When they tearfully said goodbye, they thought they would never see him again.

And they might not have…if it weren’t for a car accident several years later and many states away. On Oct. 30, Cubby was hit by a car in Plattsburgh, a city in northern New York. A dog control officer took the canine to Palmers Veterinary Clinic. Vets checked Cubby out and declared him free from serious injury, though his fur was so thick and matted – and strangely enough, contained a fishhook – that he had to be sedated so it could get cut. Cubby was then scanned for a microchip, and a match came up in Florida.

Homecoming Plans

The microchip company contacted the pup’s former family and discovered that they had returned to the U.S. and were living in California, with plans to relocate to Florida.

The family got in touch with the Elmore SPCA, which was caring for Cubby after the accident. They provided pics of Cubby when he lived with them and was well-cared for.

Cubby is en route back to Florida in a car. He will be reunited with his original family, with whom he will celebrate his ninth birthday next month.

“The humans on both sides of this transport are very excited; it will be a thrilling and emotional reunion,” the Elmore SPCA wrote in a Facebook post. “All of us at Elmore SPCA wish this cute little gremlin, named Cubby, a wonderful, uneventful return ride to Florida and the best life forward with a family who loves him.”
