Top Dog Breeds With Colorful Coats

Every dog has a unique appearance that is part of what makes it that breed. While some may have longer bodies, shorter snouts, or adorable ears, other dog breeds are known for their striking looks and flashy coats. Learn more about these interesting-looking pups and the top dog breeds with colorful coats.

Catahoula Leopard Dog

A hunting dog native to the Americas, the Catahoula Leopard Dog has one of the coolest coats around. Their gray or white base coat is covered with a series of various-colored spots, ranging from speckled grays to light browns. Just like their name, it gives them a striking, leopard-like appearance!

Blue Nose Pitbull

Blue-nose American Pitbull Terriers aren’t their own breed, but a coat color. Along with their namesake “blue” nose, they feature a similar blue-gray coat, with white flashes on the paws or chest. This unique coloration also gives their coats an extra shine in the sun — making them almost glitter.

Harlequin Great Dane

Harlequin Great Danes are a unique coat color for the breed. They feature a white base coat with large, black spots, giving the Great Dane an almost cow-like appearance. Combined with their large size, you might just double-take when you see one on the sidewalk!

Treeing Tennessee Brindle

Another American native, the Treeing Tennessee Brindle is a hound dog with a distinct coat. The brindle coloration gives them a similar appearance to tortoiseshell cats, with a brown base and flecks of gray, black, and brown streaks throughout. They also have a strong baying voice.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi doesn’t sport the typical stubby bottom and orange and white fur. Instead, they have a brindled or merle coat with a long, fluffy tail. They’re one of the oldest dog breeds around, originating in Wales, and a close cousin to the other popular long-bodied breed, the Dachshund.

Liver-ticked German Shorthaired Pointer

While German Shorthaired Pointers already have a striking coat, the liver-ticked variety takes it a step further. Instead of the grayish base coat with a large brown patch spot, they have a solid white base coat covered in liver, or brown, spots called ticks.

Irish Red Setter

The Irish Setter comes in a variety of coat colors, however, the red coat is the classic, and most iconic. These gorgeous dogs feature a bright-red, flowing coat that is sure to be the envy of everyone around. In addition, these dogs make wonderful companions.

Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

The blue merle is a unique coat color of the Australian Shepherd. It’s their most iconic look, with a coat covered in flashes of gray, black, and brown spotting along their back, legs, and face. However, there is some controversy around this coat color, as the double-merle trait is linked to deafness in the breed.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs feature a short, sleek coat with a shiny appearance. Their coat features a large white flash on the chest and paws, brown legs and cheeks, and black over the ears, face, and back. These dogs will certainly draw the attention of any passerby.

Alaskan Malamute

While less known for their coat color, the Alaskan Malamute is well-known for their excessive fluff and bear-like appearance. Their coats are a variety of brilliant grays, looking almost wolf-like. Combined with their great size and adorably curled tails, they’ll be sure to leave everyone awwing in delight when spotted.

Panda German Shepherd

Panda German Shepherds don’t actually resemble pandas, but their unique appearance helps them stand out. This coat features a white flash along the chest and front legs, turning into a brown, and then black saddle over the back and tail. In addition, their faces feature a similar tri-color pattern.
