August is National Peach Month–a perfect time to share a juicy, sweet peach treat with your dog. Peaches are full of healthy vitamins and nutrients for your pooch. They contain fiber and antioxidants that are good for dogs, but like all good things, peaches are best served in moderation. Too many peaches can cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea for some dogs, so limit serving sizes and ask your veterinarian before serving any human foods, including peaches, to your pup. Here are six delicious peach dog treat recipes for you and your dog to try during National Peach Month.
A few words of caution before you begin. None of these treats are meant to meet your dog’s full nutritional requirements, and they should only be given as sometimes-treats. Make sure you use real, fresh, organic peaches that are thoroughly washed before serving. Remove the stem and pit, as these can cause choking or gastrointestinal blockages. Do not use canned peaches or artificial peach flavoring. These can contain added sugar or sweeteners that can make your dog sick. Some dogs can be allergic to peaches, so it is always important to consult your veterinarian before feeding them to your dog. With all of that out of the way, enjoy making these fun recipes.
1. Peaches N’ Cream Fro-Yo Treats
- 12 ounces lactose-free yogurt
- 2 peaches
- 1/2 cup water
First, cut the peaches into small pieces and mix them in a bowl with the yogurt. Add the water and blend. You can either blend the mixture until it is smooth, or you can leave it chunky if you think your dog would prefer some bigger bits of peach in their treats. Pour the mixture into an ice tray or mold and freeze. Once they are frozen, pop them out and serve. These are a refreshing treat for a hot summer day. 2. Honey Peach Biscuits
- 1 1/2 cups diced peaches
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, then puree the diced peaches. Mix the peaches with the honey and flour until the mixture becomes a dough. Roll the dough onto a floured surface until it is 1/4 inch thick, then use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place the shapes onto a baking sheet and prick each shape with a fork. 3. Frozen Peach Sticks
- 1 pound peaches (skin and pit removed)
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1/8 cup corn starch
- 3 cups oats
- 2 tablespoons raw honey
Place the water and peaches in a pot and heat until the water boils. Reduce the heat to low and let the peaches simmer for 30 minutes or until they are soft. Once the peaches are soft, mash them with a potato masher and return them to low heat. Put the corn starch in a separate bowl and slowly add cold water while stirring (no more than 1/4 cup) until the corn starch is just barely dissolved. Add the corn starch to the peaches and stir. It will thicken quickly. Add the honey and oats and stir. Refrigerate the mixture until it is cold. Once the mixture is cold and a little firm, roll it into several long, log-like shapes. 4. Peanut Butter Peach Frozen Pops
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (with NO xylitol)
- 3 cups lactose-free yogurt
- 1 banana
- 1/2 peach
Peel the banana and place it in a blender. Cutting it into smaller pieces can help it blend more easily. Add the yogurt, peanut butter, and peach (again, cut up for easier blending) and blend all the ingredients together. Pour the mixture into an ice tray or mold and freeze. 5. Peach Oatmeal Dog Cookies
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 3/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup diced peaches
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon cinammon
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Stir the oats and 1/2 cup of water into a large bowl. In a food processor or blender, puree the peaches, canola oil, molasses, and vanilla with 1/8 cup of water. Stir the blended mixture into the oats. Add the flour, cinnamon, and 1/8 cup of water and stir it all together. Scoop the mixture onto a baking sheet and form it into small, flat cookie shapes. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn off the oven and let the cookies cool. Once they have cooled down, remove the cookies from the baking sheet and serve. 6. Kiwi Peach Frozen Treats
- 1 cup chopped kiwi (skin removed)
- 1 cup chopped peaches (skin removed)
- 1 1/2 cups coconut water
