Can Dogs Have Béarnaise Sauce? Is Béarnaise Sauce Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs have béarnaise sauce? Maybe you’ve thought about sharing a taste with your pooch while spooning some luxurious béarnaise sauce over a traditional steak. If humans can eat béarnaise sauce, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t eat béarnaise sauce safely. The main issue with serving this sauce to a dog is that it’s a very fatty food. If your dog eats too much fat, their chances of developing canine obesity will increase.

Additionally, béarnaise sauce often has a lot of salt it in, and you don’t want to risk your dog contracting salt poisoning.

If your dog managed to eat a lot of this sauce, call your veterinarian for further advice. Here’s what you need to know about béarnaise sauce and dogs.

Why Is Béarnaise Sauce Bad For Dogs?

The principal problem with serving béarnaise sauce to your dog is that it’s a very high fat food. If your dog winds up eating too much fat on a regular basis, they are likely to become overweight, which can lead to a wide range of medical conditions.

Additionally, consuming too much fat puts your dog at risk of developing pancreatitis.

Beyond the fat content of béarnaise sauce, there’s also an issue with the extra sodium it contains. If your dog eats too much sodium, they run the risk of developing conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

There is also a chance that a dog who eats too much sodium can go on to suffer from salt poisoning, and in extreme cases, salt poisoning can prove to be fatal.

Firstly, if your dog only sneaks in a very small amount of béarnaise sauce, they will likely be okay. Just keep an eye out for any adverse reactions, and possibly be prepared to deal with cleaning up potty accidents or vomit.

However, if your dog manages to consume a more significant amount of béarnaise sauce, it’s best to stay cautious and consult with your vet.

Depending on your dog’s age, weight, and medical condition, they might require actual medical help or intervention if they’ve scarfed down too much sauce.
