Can Dogs Eat Salami? Is Salami Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat salami? Maybe you’ve thought about sharing some with your pooch while slicing up salami in the course of constructing a hearty lunchtime sandwich. If humans can eat salami, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t safely eat salami. While salami might not technically be classified as poisonous to dogs, it contains such high levels of fat and sodium that it’s not really a safe or sensible food to serve to your dog.

Additionally, salami often has garlic and onion powder added to it, and garlic and onions are both ingredients that could prove harmful to your dog.

Why Is Salami Bad For Dogs?

Salami is high in fat and high in sodium, both of which make it unsuitable for dogs. It’s also usually made with extra spices, like garlic and onion powder, which could also harm your dog.

A high fat diet puts a dog at risk of becoming overweight, which in turn can often lead to many other health concerns. Additionally, dogs who consume too many fatty foods face an increased risk of developing pancreatitis.

Salami’s high sodium content can also lead to health conditions. Consuming too much sodium can cause heart disease and blood pressure, along with the risk of experiencing salt poisoning.

What Should I Do If My Dog Eats Salami?

First of all, don’t panic if you see your dog eating a small bite of salami. They will likely be okay. Just remember to keep watch for any of the common symptoms of salt poisoning, such as drinking more water than usual, vomiting, or diarrhea.

However, if you notice that your dog has consumed a much larger amount of salami, it’s a smart move to consult your vet. They will be able to ask more detailed questions about any symptoms and your dog’s medical history and then decide if they will need medical assistance.
