Can Dogs Drink Milkshakes? Are Milkshakes Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs drink milkshakes? You may be asking this because you want to share a delicious dessert with your furry friend. Humans can drink milkshakes, so are they also safe for dogs to drink?

The short answer is no, milkshakes are not safe for dogs to drink. They contain ingredients that dogs should not consume, but some milkshakes are more dangerous than others.

If you suspect your dog has gotten into a milkshake, call your veterinarian to determine the best course of action. Here is why milkshakes are bad for dogs.

Why Are Milkshakes Bad For Dogs?

Milkshakes contain extremely high amounts of refined sugar and dairy. While humans can digest these ingredients in moderation, your dog may have a more difficult time.

Moreover, milkshakes made with ingredients that are toxic to dogs, like chocolate, are dangerous if ingested by your pup. Milkshakes made with nondairy ice creams, like coconut ice cream, are less likely to cause stomach upset.

In general, it’s good to keep your pup away from refined sugar. Because of the high sugar and dairy content, your dog may have uncomfortable stomach problems if they drink a milkshake.

If your dog drank a milkshake, the first thing you should do is determine if there are harmful ingredients in that milkshake. Chocolate milkshakes or milkshakes that use ice cream made with cocoa powder or nutmeg are extremely toxic to dogs.

If your dog drank a milkshake with one of these toxic ingredients, call your vet right away.

If your pup drank a milkshake without these toxic ingredients, keep an eye on them for the next few hours. Due to the high dairy content of milkshakes, your dog will most like experience diarrhea and/or vomiting. If your dog is healthy, these symptoms should pass.

You might give your dog plain food like boiled rice to help soak up the bad ingredients they ingested. If your dog suffers from diabetes, they should be taken to your vet for evaluation.
