Fox tapeworm infection in dogs is caused by a type of tapeworm that is found in fox poop. The condition is quite rare, but the symptoms can be severe.

In general, both very young pups and older dogs seem more at risk of catching the condition.

The condition produces a range of symptoms. For example, some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Appetite loss
  • Anemia
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Skin turning yellow
  • Respiratory issues

Causes of Fox Tapeworm Infection in Dogs

The cause of the condition is a tapeworm. Technically, the name of the tapeworm is Taenia crassiceps. The condition happens when a dog eats the eggs of the tapeworm.

Treatments for Fox Tapeworm Infection in Dogs

Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Secondly, your vet will ask about any circumstances where your dog could have come into contact with the tapeworms.

Thirdly, a full physical examination will be carried out. Blood and urine tests will also be taken.

In general, X-rays can also show how far the condition has spread.

Unfortunately, most cases require surgery to treat the condition. In some cases, deworming medication can also be used.

While recovering at home it is important to provide your dog with a quiet and calm environment. Also, keep up regular visits with your vet to monitor your dog’s recovery.
