James is a 9-year-old boy who has a lot of trouble interacting with other people. He has a form of autism and doesn't speak. He also flinches when touched and avoids eye contact, even with his own family. But when his loyal service dog, Mahe, is around, James is much more comfortable. The black Labrador Retriever keeps James from feeling anxious and afraid.

When James had to go to the hospital for an MRI, Mahe wouldn't let the boy out of his sight. James was having seizures and needed to be put under anesthesia so he could be diagnosed. Mahe stayed with him every step of the way to provide comfort and reassurance. He hopped up on James's hospital bed and nuzzled his face as he went under.
Mahe keeping James safe on the side of a busy road while I lock the car. A short appointment at the hospital before James has his MRI in a couple of weeks. Mahe will come in for that too

In addition to providing comfort, Mahe is trained to alert James's parents if he has a seizure. He was trained by Assistance Dogs New Zealand, and since joining the family two and a half years ago, Mahe has made a huge difference in James's life. He keeps an eye on his boy at all times, and James is happy to have a best friend to watch out for him.
James and Mahe's best day ever!
