Charlie, a 6-year-old Golden Retriever from Adelaide, Australia, has broken the world record for something most dogs do every day — bark.
Officials from Guinness World Records have just confirmed that Charlie’s bark is in fact the world’s loudest dog bark. When Charlie was a participant in the Purina Bark in the Park event, an Australian national competition held in Adelaide late last year, his ear-splitting bark registered at a whopping 113.1 decibels, or about as loud as a typical rock concert.
The previous record holder was Daz, a white German Shepherd from London. Daz set the record back in June 2009 with a bark that officially measured a more than respectable 108 decibels — that’s roughly as loud as a power saw, according to this decibel comparison chart.
New Guinness record holder Charlie developed his impressive bark at a young age, says his owner Belinda Freebairn.
“When he got a bit older, when he was about a year old, he just started to get that real deep bark and I knew he was really loud,” Freebairn tells ABC News Australia.
While Freebairn is quite familiar with her Golden Retriever’s booming bark, she never could have expected it would earn Charlie a place in the record books.
“I think they roughly knew what the record was but I didn’t really think he could beat it, I must admit,” Freebairn says of Charlie, “but he did.”
Freebairn says that, despite Charlie’s new title, he only very rarely barks at home, and even then, only on command.
“He’s really quiet,” Freebairn insists.
