From Businesswire, a new book is using scientific research to sing the praises of plant-based diets for dogs. Titled The Plant-Powered Dog, Diana Laverdure-Dunetz, MS, a “globally renowned vegan canine nutritionist”, authored the ground-breaking book.

In the book, Laverdure shows “that a well-balanced plant-based diet is the healthiest and safest for modern companion dogs”. Published by Dogwise Publishing this past January, the book cites research in canine evolution, epigenetics, and more to “dispel the myth that dogs are carnivores.” Instead, the book provides readers with a thorough foundation to create nutritious, plant-based meals for their dogs. Notably, the book also includes homeopathic remedies for chronic canine illnesses.

A Plant-Based Diet for Dogs, Backed by Science

Notably, Laverdure holds a Masters’s in Animal Science and Nutrition and has formulated vegan canine diets for over a decade. Importantly, Laverdure says research shows that plant-based diets have health benefits for humans, such as controlling inflammation. According to her, “through rigorous research, The Plant-Powered Dog demonstrates that our canine companions can experience many of the same benefits”.

Although dog parents may hesitate to cut meat out of their dog’s diet, recent studies have shown that vegan diets can actually improve canine healthInterestingly, on the Plant-Powered Dog website, Laverdure cites Richard Pitcairn, DVM, Ph.D,  as one of her mentors and references. Significantly, Pitcairn, along with his wife Susan, performed years of clinical research on nutrition in veterinary medicine. Amazingly, Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide To Natural Health For Dogs and Cats, first published in 1982, has sold over 500,000 copies.

Vegan Diets Are a Timely Option for Dog Parents

Appropriately, The Plant-Powered Dog comes at a time when dog parents are growing concerned about where their pup’s food is coming from. Additionally, climate change is starting to take a toll on us and our dogs. As such, resources like The Plant-Powered Dog can prove invaluable in uncertain times.
