They say that dogs and their parents can resemble each other. Certainly, different dog breeds can attract parents with certain personality traits.

From Golden Retrievers to Pomeranians

Research by The Kennel Club suggests that Golden Retriever parents, like Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, are more emotionally stable. They would describe themselves as happy and positive too. Meanwhile, parents of Cocker Spaniels – who include the Prince and Princess of Wales – are more curious and family-oriented, while Jack Russell Terrier parents, like Mariah Carey, are more loyal.

The most affectionate pet parents have Staffordshire Bull Terriers, while these parents are likely to be trustworthy too. Meanwhile, Border Terrier parents are charming, lively, and exuberant.

Miniature Schnauzer parents? These are likely to be more organized and inclined to stick to the rules, while Pomeranian parents are more extroverted and agreeable. Springer Spaniel parents tend to be punctual, while if you’ve got a Whippet at home you might enjoy taking risks and seeking out new experiences.

Choosing the Right Breed

The Kennel Club polled over 1,500 pet parents with furry friends spanning 16 different breeds. Researchers then ranked them against personality statements that indicated their levels of the Big Five personality traits. These are extroversion, openness, agreeableness, emotional stability, and conscientiousness.

Just under two-thirds of respondents said that they followed their heart rather than their head when deciding on the right breed for them. Or, that they chose their pooch based on looks.

Bill Lambert, spokesperson for The Kennel Club, told the Daily Mail that “It appears that we can often tell a lot about a person from the type of dog that they own, with the dominant personality traits of Jack Russell owners – owned by the likes of King Charles – being their loyalty, generous spirit for helping others and their trustworthiness.”

But whatever somebody’s reasons for choosing one breed or another, all dogs deserve a loving home. The Kennel Club organizes Discover Dogs, which runs from Oct. 15 to Oct. 16 at the ExCel London. It gives visitors the chance to meet hundreds of dogs of numerous different breeds.
