We try to promote the philosophy of “Adopt, don’t shop!” when it comes to bringing a new dog into your home. Some professional breeders are responsible, but there are too many that don’t care about dogs and are just trying to make a buck by overbreeding. A breeder in Atlanta, Georgia, for example, recently passed away leaving 200 Yorkshire Terriers without a home. Now these dogs need help getting adopted.
Claws and Paws Animal Rescue is a no-kill rescue group that helped to find some of these Yorkies homes. They took in 12 pups and teamed up with Petco to host an adoption event. The good news is that all 12 of their Yorkies were adopted and went to loving forever homes. They are also going to post the names of other rescues who took in Yorkies after the breeder died on their Facebook page, so keep an eye out if you’re able to take in one of these pups. You can also donate to Claws and Paws to help them keep their operation going.
As someone who rescued a Yorkshire Terrier, I can tell you that they’re very sweet, loyal dogs that should be socialized early. They’re generally eager to please, easy to train, and very smart. You can help these pups by spreading the word and letting people know that they are available. Encourage people to adopt instead of finding a breeder. There are countless dogs sitting in shelters waiting to be loved, and there’s no need to breed more pups when so many already need homes.
Will you adopt one of these Yorkies? Do you already have a rescue dog? Let us know in the comments below!
UPDATE: I spoke to a representative from Claws and Paws and they are having trouble tracking down where the other dogs were sent and who is helping with their adoption. They also said that not all of the 200 dogs were Yorkies. If you’re interested in a Yorkie, you can try looking through our Adoption Page or look for a local Yorkie rescue near you!
