Company DNA Tests Dog Poop To Find Owners Who Don’t Scoop

Few things are quite as frustrating as stepping in the mess left over by dog owners who don’t pick up after their pups. Not only does it ruin your shoes and stink to high heaven, it attracts rats, pests, and diseases. Beside that, it’s a slap in the face to diligent scoopers who take care of their dogs’ waste properly. Well businesses in Bloomfield, Colorado aren’t going to take that poop anymore.

A company called PooPrints swabs dogs’ DNA and puts it on file. When poop is found, it’s sent in to the lab and matched against the doggy DNA on record to find a match. This allows commercial properties to enforce their “no pooping” rules. In fact, companies that use PooPrints saw a drop of 81 percent in un-scooped waste piles.

Some residents claim that apartment buildings and complexes are getting nit-picky and expecting too much, pulling fines out of their rent checks without prior warning. It can be difficult to pick up smaller waste piles, especially from grass at night when it’s too dark to see. But the reduction in hazardous dog waste seems to indicate that businesses won’t be relaxing their policies any time soon.

What do you think? Is this a service that helps keep waste under control, or does it go too far? Let us know in the comments below.
