Crocky gets as far as the entrance to his kennel building before dropping flat on the floor and refusing to take another step. In the video shared by @hope4miamipaws, the contrast in his behavior is hard to miss: outside, Crocky gets to sniff around, pick out a toy, and settle beside a volunteer for some affection; inside, he is back in a noisy kennel, waiting for the next chance to leave. For this shelter dog, a little freedom seems to make going back to the kennel that much harder.
Shelter dog isn’t being ‘stubborn’ — he shuts down when it’s time to return to his kennel
The volunteer, who is also filming, pulls on his leash, but the 7-year-old American Bulldog mix just looks up at her, holding his ground. He looks at her with pleading eyes. The message on the video from his POV says, “Please… don’t make me go back in there,” and it is just too sad to watch him like this.
A little later, Crocky is back inside his kennel, surrounded by the sounds of other dogs barking. He looks toward the volunteer again, smacks his lips and gives his tail a small wag, as if still hoping another trip outside might happen. Then the video shows why those outings matter so much to him.
Outside, Crocky looks like a different dog. He wanders over to a basket of toys hanging along the fence, taking his own sweet time picking one. The sweet pup wants to sniff all of them. He also rests his head in a volunteer’s lap, looking completely at ease.
Another still shot shows him giving a volunteer a kiss, with the video describing him as loyal and affectionate. His profile says he is potty trained, walks easily on a leash, rides well in the car, knows “sit” and enjoys cuddles. He is described as mellow, with low to medium energy, and has been at the shelter since December 8, 2025. For Crocky, the problem does not seem to be going outside. It is having to give that freedom back.
The video has received more than 1,300 likes, with viewers sharing heartbreak over his situation and hoping someone will finally bring this sweet shelter dog home.
