Nyla’s last walk was supposed to be just that — a final walk before the clock ran out. However, she didn’t know that. So, she was still bouncing at her kennel door, tail wagging furiously when her favorite volunteer arrived to take her outside.
Nikki had spent months working with Nyla, helping her become more comfortable around people after she first arrived at the shelter, frightened and trembling. Now, on her last day at the shelter, the sweet dog greeted the human with a play bow, completely unaware of what was hanging over the day. The video shared by @kiefer_nikki ends there, but the story does not.
Shelter dog’s final walk with human on her last day takes an unexpected turn with an adoption
The video opens with Nikki walking past the shelter kennels before reaching Nyla’s door, with the words “My last walk with Nyla” appearing on the screen. It is a tough setup, especially because the pup has no idea why this walk feels different.
The second Nyla spots Nikki, though, all of that disappears. Her tail starts wagging, she lets out an excited bark, and drops into a playful bow. Then she starts bouncing around, clearly thrilled that her favorite volunteer has come to get her.
Nikki asks, “You’re so happy to see me, huh?” Nyla’s answer is basically another round of wiggling. What makes the moment harder to watch is knowing that this was the pup’s last day at the shelter, with a deadline of 7 p.m. on August 13. She was simply enjoying time with someone she trusted, unaware that she needed a home quickly.
Nyla had not always been this comfortable. In earlier updates, Nikki showed that she was once so frightened that she would tremble when people approached and could not even be leashed. With patience and regular time around kind humans, that slowly changed. Eventually, the pup was waiting for humans at her kennel door, eager to get out.
Then came the update everyone was hoping for. Just five hours after the video was posted, a comment appeared with three incredibly happy words: “Nyla got adopted.” Hundreds of people had shared and commented on the post, helping more eyes find Nyla before her deadline. Somehow, her last day at the shelter became the beginning of something completely different.
