Shelter Dog Flinches When Human Approaches Him, Signaling a Heartbreaking Past

This video features a shelter dog named Jackson who flinches whenever a human approaches, showing just how frightened he is. Weighing nearly 100 pounds, Jackson is a big yet gentle dog with a heartbreaking past. When a volunteer approached the pup and offered him a treat, he immediately got scared and flinched.

It took time, effort, and plenty of patience for the volunteer to slowly earn his trust. She continued to give him the space he needed, and eventually, Jackson began accepting treats from her. It may seem like a small moment, but for a dog as fearful as Jackson, taking a treat from a human is a meaningful step toward learning that he can feel safe again.

Human assures shelter dog they won’t hurt him and earns his trust

This video captures the story of a big shelter dog named Jackson, who weighs nearly 100 pounds but has a gentle heart. The volunteer shared that the pup has had a heartbreaking past, yet he remains kind and loving. He has not given up hope. He is simply scared, still believing that people will hurt him. Watching him struggle with that fear is truly heartbreaking.

The volunteer shared that a few days ago, a staff member told her that she should meet Jackson. When she went over to meet him, she was enthusiastic and lovingly offered him a treat while asking him to sit. However, Jackson “cowered,” seemingly believing that she was going to hurt him. The volunteer didn’t lose hope and instead decided to be patient with him.

She slowed down, lowered her voice, and gently offered him treats. She gave Jackson the space to decide whether he wanted to trust her. Eventually, that trust began to grow, and the pup realized that she wasn’t there to hurt him but to shower him with love. He bravely came closer and eventually allowed her to pet him, walk him, and spend time with him.

Jackson’s life before arriving at the shelter is unknown, but his reactions suggest that he may have experienced pain or mistreatment in the past. Yet, despite everything, he continues to choose kindness and slowly learn to trust people. Jackson is available for adoption at Fulton County Animal Services.
