Rescue Dog Buries Her Head in the Bed Like She Still Does Not Know She’s Safe

A heartwarming video from @tailstogetherco on Instagram shows a rescue Beagle dog named Clara who appears as though she just wants to disappear. The Ridglan Farms rescue Beagle presses her face deep into the corner of a dog bed, keeping her eyes open. And, if there is anything this dog’s body language depicts, it is the fact that she wants to hide away from everybody. When she arrived at her foster home, Clara was the most shut down of the six Beagles rescued from the facility. As the foster’s caption says, “She wanted to disappear into the corner with all her might.”

Rescue dog takes first steps out of safe space after hiding away in corner, still scared

Thankfully, the rescue Beagle went through an awakening in a way a dog would do once they start feeling safe. On the car ride home, she steals a glance at her new human, appearing frightened but curious, giving her the kind of look that says, “I want to trust you, but I do not yet know how.” At the foster home, Clara finds her pack, including fellow Ridglan Farms Beagles who already speak the language of romping and napping and knowing freedom as they have never before. They become her guides.

Soon enough, Clara makes a foster sibling-friend, curls up beside them, and accepts a treat directly from her foster mom’s hand. Then came the first brave steps out of her safe space, standing up in her playpen to explore, her paws crossing an invisible line she had drawn for herself. Later, one couch nap turns into three. And finally, she steps outdoors with the other dogs and finds grass under her feet and the sun on her back, a peace she had never known.

The video’s on-screen caption reads, “Biggest moments for our most shut down Ridglan Farms beagle, Clara,” and for a dog who was a part of decades of cruelty allegations and intense activist pressure, every moment out of the cage is a huge moment.

Now, Clara is learning what safety feels like, and as her foster family wrote, “Welcome to the good life, Clara!”
