Affection from a clingy dog is sweet, but affection from a dog who usually avoids cuddles altogether feels like winning the lottery. Some pets prefer their personal space and make that very clear every single day. That is why one owner was especially surprised when her independent Golden Retriever suddenly decided to become her bedside companion while she was sick. The touching moment was later shared in a recent Instagram video by @thespicygoldenn.
‘Non-affectionate’ Golden Retriever gives sick mom cuddles
The Instagram reel opens with Bentley’s owner lying in bed while recovering from an illness. The on-screen text says, “Asking for my spicy golden for cuddles while I’m sick,” suggesting that asking Bentley for affection is not something that normally works.
At the beginning of the video, Bentley sits a few feet away from his owner on the bed. He watches her quietly from a distance before slowly getting up and moving closer. The dog appears curious and attentive, almost as if he senses something is different.
A few moments later, the Retriever curls up beside his mom and stays there, giving her the cuddles she had asked for. The interaction may seem small, but it stood out because of how unusual the behavior was for him. According to his owner, Bentley is generally not an affectionate dog and rarely seeks physical closeness. In the caption, she explained, “He’s not an affectionate dog at all but when I’m sick he’s a sweetheart.”
There is some science behind that idea. Dogs are highly observant animals and are especially sensitive to changes in routine, body language, scent, and tone of voice. When you are sick, your behavior naturally changes. You may move more slowly, rest more, or sound different.
Dogs can often pick up on those signals quickly. While they may not fully understand illness itself, many respond by staying closer, becoming calmer, or offering comfort. Bentley’s rare cuddle session was simply his way of showing up for his mom in a way she least expected.
