Jack update: Let my Heeler heal.

Jack, the severely neglected seven-year-old Heeler from Espanola, New Mexico, continues to face an uphill battle. But there’s reason for hope.

Yesterday morning, the shelter veterinarian decided that another operation was needed for Jack, thanks to a deep infection at the site of the amputation. Fortunately the dog pulled through the second surgery, and as of this morning, is resting in his foster home.

Meanwhile, Espanola police officer George Martinez, has been charged with an animal cruelty misdemeanor. Hard to believe that such an excruciating, life-threatening injury would not be prosecuted as a felony, but such are the laws in New Mexico – and in most states. Frankly, it’s actually a triumph that the Department would investigate one of its own in a case in which the victim isn’t even human.

Nina Chiotasso, Espanola Valley Humane Society‘s community outreach director, told the Santa Fe New Mexican daily newspaper: “He is wagging his little, stumpy tail, so we hope that if anyone can defy the odds, it’s Jack.”

Please consider helping. Donations can be made online at www.evalleyshelter.org/donate (in honor of Jack), over the phone at (505) 753-8662 or mailed to Espanola Valley Humane Society, 108 Hamm Parkway, Espanola NM 87532 (just put “Jack” in the check memo).
