Tallest dog in the world passes away

Two years ago, Zeus, a 44-inch tall Great Dane, was named the tallest dog in the world by Guinness World Records. Sadly, the Ostego, Michigan, pooch passed away on September 3 at 5 years of age.

While standing on his hind legs, Zeus measured 7 feet and 4 inches; he weighed approximately 165 pounds. According to Guinness, the dog consumed 12 cups — or a 30 pound bag of food — every two weeks.

“We realized that Zeus was going to be extra tall,” Denise Doorlag, Zeus’ owner, told Fox 17 News. “Probably right around 10 months old when we realized that he was taller than his dad.”

Zeus wasn’t just a celebrity, he was also a therapy dog at local hospitals and schools in the Kalamazoo area.

The cause of death was old age. Great Danes typically have a shorter life span, due to their size.
