If the idea of throwing a birthday party for your dog raises your hackles, consider hosting a whine and cheese gathering instead. This is the party for the sophisticated set--no tacky party hats or mushy "liver cakes" to contend with--just the people and dogs you love, getting together to enjoy the finer things in life.

And remember, this is your party. You're free to make it as canine-centric as you desire. You can bill it as a conventional cocktail hour (to which dogs just happen to be welcome). Or, Fido can be the focus, an affair replete with mini spam sandwiches and carob-dipped strawberries. Anything in between works too.

One note of caution: If brie and manchego are on the menu for the humans, keep the cheese trays well out of reach of the canines. Unless you want to be hosting a carpet cleaning party the following morning.
