Suzi the fuzzy JR terrierist - February 2008 - age 9¼ yars

Suzi

Type: rough-coated Jack Russell terrier
Age: 9 (67 dog years)
  • Also answers to: Silly Little Fuzzy Dog; Fuzzdog
  • Best trick: dancing in circles on her back legs
  • Quirkiest habit: trying to climb trees (no success!)
  • Why I chose this dog: I didn't; she chose me!
  • Is not a fan of: black squirrels!!!!

More about Suzi

Suzi, as was Andy the Dalmatian whom she mourned greatly when he died of old age in August 2007), was a "pound puppy". I never would have chosen her---but she chose me. When most of the other dogs at the pound were begging, "Please choose me!", Suzi communicated via telepathy, "It's about time you got here, Master, let's go home NOW!". She also chose her name and put it in my mind.

Suzi, being a terrier, feels strongly that no rodent has a right to exist. This goes double for black squirrels. We have about a dozen black squirrels living in the trees in our yards (both front and back) and a few hundred in the neighborhood. The squirrels love to tease Suzi, who doesn't understand how they can run up a tree but she can't run up it to catch them. We also have quite a few rabbits (rarely seen) in residence in the yards; Suzi does not grant them a right to exist either. She's never caught a squirrel or a rabbit and I don't think she ever will now that she's a "senior citizen" canine.

Kevin the Kangaroo - 19 March 2008 - age 6½ months

Kevin

Type: Black Labrador Retriever
Age: 1 (13 dog years)
  • Also answers to: Kangaroo; black dog
  • Best trick: smiling
  • Quirkiest habit: bouncing
  • Why I chose this dog: couldn't find a suitable Dalmatian nearby
  • Is not a fan of: My black lawn mower. I think he's trying to tell me that it wants to add people, Labrador puppies and fuzzy terrierists to its diet.

More about Kevin

The hole in the couch cushion and the shredded paper on the floor are "puppy damage". Kevin loves to bounce (very much like Tigger in the Winnie-the-Pooh books), which is why he's called a kangaroo.

Kevin is farm-bred. I purchased him from a dairy farmer who breeds Labs to assist with his cows and sells the extra puppies. It's a sad commentary on our current society that I bought a purebred dog from a breeder for about half the exhorbitant fees now charged by "Humane Societies" for adoption ... and I had the advantage of knowing his breeding, background and probable disposition. Of course he came with all his puppy shots and a clean bill of health.
