Train your dog to ring a bell. Dagwood (being a border collie which are highly intelligent) took only once to get him started. Now it's really funny to see people's faces that are visiting when Dagwood goes over to the door and rings the bell! It very convenient for people without a yard maybe living in a town home, condo or apartment. Try it with your dog! It's really a great way for your dog to communicate that he needs to go out.
Here's how to teach your dog to ring a bell to go outside:
1. Buy a bell (we use what is actually a bell that is normally hung in a bird's cage)
2. Install the bell next to your door at your dog's nose height.
3. Use one of your dogs favorite treats and gently take his nose and brush the bell.....then praise him lots and give him the treat.
4. Let him outside immediately after he has rung the bell.
5. Continue as many times as needed for him to ring the bell by himself.
Dagwood's Health Check Up 12 years old:
Dagwood doesn't look 12 years old! He just got a clean check up from the vet. One healthy camper!!!! You ROCK Daggie!!
Hi! My name is Dagwood I was born March 25th, 1996. My "new" parents picked me out of seven puppies…....actually I am # 7. I was the "rowdy one" and screamed all the way back to my new home. We stopped at a pet store on the way and I was lavishly showered with gifts. I thought “OK” maybe this could be the beginning of something good. And so it was and still is…………
Favorite Activities: Running, playing with my toys, swimming at the beach, riding in the boat and rounding up my mama.
I was named after a big sandwich called a "Dagwood". I am a Tri-colored Border Collie that is VERY energetic and is the sweetest dog on this earth (just ask my momma, she calls me Sweet Pea. Border collies are naturally herding dogs and since I don't have any sheep to gather I herd up my momma. Yeah! she laughs but I know who's REALLY in charge. I lived in California for the first 3 years of my life where I enjoyed the days of lounging in my very own swimming pool (you know the ones that people buy for their toddlers?). Then we moved to Texas. Texas is indeed an adventurous place. Now, not only do I have another pool to play in (this one is for adults) I get to go boating in Galveston Bay. I always make sure to wear my yellow life vest while riding in the boat. Not only does it keep me safe it also looks great! My daily routine consists of running 4 miles in the morning, eating, sleeping, playing with my toys, going for walks, visiting friends on my potty breaks. I have lots of friends, Panzer, Gracie, George, Rascal and Tike are just a few of them and then there are the kitties that like ME to chase them! Daddy always says, Get the kitty! Being the obedient fur friend that I am, I comply with his request. And so the chase begins! I will be turning 12 years old this March but don't let the age fool you into believing I am turning into an old codger!! I still continue an active lifestyle and I don't have any grey hair yet (I take after my momma). Life is good......................
