bone burial

There has been only one occasion in Lila’s life when she has refused her breakfast. And that was worrying. Very worrying. Until I noticed her stowing bits of kibble in her cheeks to transport them to her bed where she carefully stashed them in the folds of a blanket. She was clearly planning for a brighter future. One with a renewed appetite (as depicted in a dog with her bone). This behaviour harks back ... (continued)

Senior dog is losing weight

My 13 year old shepard mix is losing weight. Its really become apparent the past few days. Of course I will be bringing him to the veterinarian, but I am wondering what suggestions people have for stimulating appetite and weight gain in an older dog. As a puppy he had serious digestive problems and needed to avoid the usual culprits (corn, wheat, soy). He has been eating Canidae All Life Stages supplemented with... (continued)

Thanks for sharing, Jean! That does look like a good and healthy recipe for tasty treats. I'll be sure to try it for my dog. Thanks again!

Help

I feed my dogs home made food, but I occasionaly give them kibble. I used to feed Merrick dog food, but they revised their products and they now contain more fish. Lady cannot eat fish because it makes her sick. Most of the healthful brands seem to contain fish. Does anyone know of a good dog food that has little or no fish?

Picky eater

I am having trouble getting Cooper to eat. It is not that he is sick, he just hates what I feed him. The only food he will readily eat is meat, but he sometimes does not even like that. I cook for my dogs, and I have never seen a dog besides him turn his nose up to a good homecooked meal. How do I get him to love food?

Best dog food?

I have a 7 month old cocker spaniel/lab mix puppy. she has eaten science diet all her life and is happy and healthy. recently, on this site, i've heard mixed reviews about that particular product. I know there is a website out there comparing all of the different foods but i was wondering, is there a decently "good" dog food that isnt outrageously expensive? She likes science diet but I dont want to give it to her... (continued)

nothing beats horse hoof

My farrier tells me that he’s the only person who can enter a certain client’s property without being set upon by the resident Rottweiler. When he turns up to shoe the horses, this ferocious dog flashes a broad smile and prances alongside his ute all the way to the stables. The Rotty knows that the farrier’s visits bring a banquet of hoof trimmings. Horse hoof. A doggy delicacy. Last week I took our Labrador... (continued)

lila's passion for the cricket

Not the field cricket but the mole cricket. So says an entomologist at the Melbourne Zoo. Over the phone I’d played him my recording of said cricket singing. Music we’ve been hearing for years, but only in the background. Never really listening. Until our Labrador Lila turned up. And developed a habit of excusing herself after dinner and disappearing. One warm evening I was curious enough to follow her. And... (continued)

How much to feed my Alaskan Malamute Puppy

My mal is almost 5 months and we are feeding him 3 times a day, 1 1/4 cup each feeding. Is this too little or too much? We have him on Blue Buffalo (Pet Smart)- puppy formula lamb & oatmeal. Is there something better out there?

a labrador with no taste for rabbit

We’ve recently had a string of record-breakingly hot, dry days (and nights!) leaving the landscape brown and yellow with only a touch of green. This normally happens each summer, but we’re ahead of schedule. And the scarcity of greenery brings out Australia’s most notorious pest: the grey rabbit. Not native to this continent but introduced by an Englishman in 1859 for sport hunting, its numbers have exploded to pla... (continued)
