I just had to make a comment about all the people looking for a "stud" for their females. I hate to say this, but if you are just breeding your female because you think she is a good dog, this is what puts so many dogs out there that shouldn't be - yes, that would make you a back yard breeder. We have way too many dogs being put to sleep every year because of indiscriminate breedings. Please leave the breeding to people that know what your breed standards are, people who health test their dogs annually and to people that possibly show their animals. We don't need anymore animals with problems like health or temperment. I am quite aggitated that so many people are looking to find a mate for their dog. You wouldn't be looking here if you are responsible.” — firestormfarms, Aug 12 2008

Look for breeders who are licensed to breed. This is important because breeding is not a hobby it is a life career. Beware of the "Hobby Breeder." A hobby breeder isn't breeding for the right reasons, they are breeding to make money and for their kids to see the miracle of birth. Breeders should be perfecting the breed by showing the dog(s) and strive for making a champion. A good breeder must also have more than 2 or 3 dogs on the property to develop a good bloodline. A female can only breed a limited amount of times before she has (and should) retire. If the breeder is limited he/she cannot continue and is risking inbreeding because there isn’t a broad enough spectrum of unrelated animals.

Not all pet stores sell puppy mill puppies or cat mill kittens (which is a bigger problem than anyone thinks). Reputable breeders will provide animals to reputable and strict pet stores. Do your research and ask a lot of questions. A manager/owner should have no problem answering questions. Ask to see USDA reports, pictures, and hip, eye, elbow screenings. Any reputable store will show these items without hesitation.

I agree Sandy, just because a dog is a champion or even just because it is from parents of champions does not mean the dog should be bred. There are all sorts of things that need to be done in order to make the best possible choice on whether or not the animal should be bred. Go back to your breeder and see what they recommend. If they are at all reputable they should be willing to mentor you through the process of what makes a dog a good specimen for breeding and can help you find your dog a mate if that is what the two of you determine. ” — smitte21, Apr 07 2008

AS FAR AS BEING CHAMPION IS THE BEST FOR BREEDING IS NOT TRUE, CHAMPION DOES NOT MEAN IT HAS HAD ITS CLEARANCES. I SHOW FOR COMFOMATION, AND HIPS AND EYE ECT.CLERANCES IS NOT A REQUIREMENT.I FOR ONE FEELS IT SHOULD BE ” — SANDY, Apr 05 2008

I assume that your male is am AKC Champion, or well on his way. It isn't likely that you would be improving the breed by breeding inferior stock. At a year old the dog is probably too young to use as stud becuase it has not been screened for all the common ailments of the breed. (hips eyes, etc.) Once it is determined that your dog would make a positive contribution to the breed, contact the breeder he came from for assistance in finding a suitable girl for him and that is compatable with his pedigree.” — tterrier4me, Apr 05 2008
