What we're naming our dogs

As the top ten list of dog names confirms, we're christening our canines with names fit for humans showing that more than ever before, Americans consider pets part of the family.

Good bye Spot, hello Molly!

Hear the words "Good girl, Molly!" or "Jake, don't eat that!" and without visual context, it's difficult to say these days whether you've stumbled onto a children's playground or into the local dog park.

As Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) confirms in its release of the top 10 dog names for 2007, we're christening our canines with names fit for humans, reflecting the trend that an increasing number of us--almost half, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association--consider pets part of the family.

Top girl dog names
1. Bella
2. Molly
3. Lucy
4. Maggie
5. Daisy
6. Sophie
7. Sadie
8. Chloe
9. Bailey
10. Lola
Top boy dog names
1. Max
2. Buddy
3. Rocky
4. Bailey
5. Jake
6. Charlie
7. Jack
8. Toby
9. Cody
10. Buster

This trend toward "people names" for our four-legged children runs wide, with a few exceptions--it's unlikely Buster, Buddy, and Rocky will ever jostle for space on school rosters.

So as we spend more and more on our nation's pets--lavishing our dogs with gifts, clothing, and bakery items rivaling any you'd find in a Paris café--doesn't it make sense that the names we're choosing for them are also more precious? The move away from Spot, Sparky, and Rover toward Chloe, Lucy, and Max suggests, in essence, that we now perceive our pets in much the same way we do our own children.

It's interesting to note that we seem to be clinging to the same set of human names. Max and Molly have been topping (or close to topping) the list for the last four years, while Sam, Sasha, and Zoe float in and out of the top ten. Which raises the question: Is it possible future parents may soon hesitate to name their daughters or sons Molly or Jake because they know too many dogs with the same names?

As for 2008, expect the trend to continue. With the pet industry growing at a rate of about eight percent, it may be a while before you attend a doggie Bar Mitzvah. But if you happen to meet a Basset Hound named Steve, don't say you weren't warned.

Words may have multiple meanings, so it helps to take the time to understand what a proposed name for your dog may actually mean. For instance, Sophie means "wisdom."

  • Is safe/not living with a dog while I am pregnant?

Is it safe to live with a dog while I am pregnant? As far as I know that prenatal development is very important. Everything can be a teratogen. Teratogens are substances that can harm my baby for instance dogs' hair. I have a story that is a true story. My doctor had two grandchildren who were deaf since they were born. He was trying so hard to heal his grandchildren, but unfortunetly, they could not be healed. He went to Singapore to check them up, and doctors in there told him that the cause was toxoplasma. My doctor's daughter used to have a lot of dogs inside her house. What do you think about this story? I want to know more about that because everthing has a possibility that we never know. I don't want to conduct an experiment with my own baby. That's why I am so curios. Thank you readers.

  • Mature dog vs puppy

My 14 year old Bouvier passed away leaving her buddy a poodle terrier mix. We brought an 8 week old Bouvier into the family.Bouv is now 3 1/2 months and our older dog wants to spend all of her time in the laundry room--both are female. Our breeder brought several pups to the house when they were 6wks. and then our pup came to our home alone @ 8wks. Pup is a herding breed and is a natural so she also nips/bites. We correct her when she bites and gets too agressive with our older dog. We have given our older dog her own time with us and alone. She gets fed first and can stay out in the yard alone. We now have her lay with us when we are sitting down. Are there any other suggestions?

I worked at a vet clinic for sometime. We sold the veterinary level foods from several different brands. The kinds pets need when they have extreme food allergies or diabetic or renal care. This food is on the higher end of pet food price range. About twice as much as grocery grade foods. But still we regularly have people come in buying the best for their furry babies. One time, a man came in to pick up the renal food for "his wife's" cat. I think for the case of canned cat food the total was $24. He jokingly scoffs at the cost and hands me a credit card. Then he says, "I can't believe I'm spending this much on cat food. I never used to be a cat person. I didn't get them. I was a dog person. I understand dogs, they show you exactly what they're feeling and thinking. Who would want an animal that doesn't run up to you when you get home? But now that we've had these two cats, I get it. It's a different kind of love. It just took having them to understand it." I haven't worked at that clinic for a few years now but moments like that are still crisp and vivid in my mind. It sounds like a similar transition for your dad. Maybe it started as a quest for companionship but turned out to be such a close camaraderie. Congratulations to him on his newfound love and hopefully this will be a new point of connection for the two of you.

  • I wrote a song to help end animal abuse and raise money for non-profit groups

I am an animal lover and musician. I wanted to find a way I could help animals and shelters, rescue groups, etc. So I wrote and recorded the song "It's Gotta Stop: The Animal Abuse Song". My goal is to have any animal related non-profit groups use the song to raise funds. My idea is to let them upload it as an MP3 or wave file where they could put it on their websites and let people download the song for a donation. Any thoughts? You can listen to the song at www.soundcloud.com/dogmom

And in the human category...

There's some overlap between the year's most popular baby names and the most common dog names. While Jack is the only one that appears unaltered (ahem) on both species' lists, variations on the same name pop up frequently.

Bella is the number one name for female dogs, and Isabella ranks second among human girls' names. Hailey, number seven in the human category, sounds an awful lot like Bailey (#4 and #9 on the girls and boys list respectively). In the number one slot for human girls, it's Sophia, and Sophie appears at number six for female dogs. Finally, Jacob--number three on the boys list--shows up as Jake on the dog list at number five.

Girls' names
1. Sophia
2. Isabella
3. Emma
4. Madison
5. Ava
6. Addison
7. Hailey
8. Emily
9. Kaitlyn
10. Olivia
Boys' names
1. Aiden
2. Ethan
3. Jacob
4. Jayden
5. Caden
6. Noah
7. Jackson
8. Jack
9. Logan
10. Matthew
