How about a tattoo? Not necessarily a portrait of your pet, but a symbol that reminds you of the special friendship you shared. I got one for my Sheepdog mix after she passed away 6 years ago. Part of her will always be with me.

I bought a Victorian mourning locket on eBay. It has two compartments. I put a photo of my dog in one side, and a snippet of his fur in the other. That way, I have a part of him close to my heart when I wear the locket.
