So you’ve decided that a regular Yorkie is not adorable and cute enough for you. You’re thinking Teacup Yorkie Puppy. There is no denying Teacup Yorkies’ extreme adorableness, and their happy-go-lucky, spirited personality can be very appealing. But just because a Teacup Yorkie is tiny doesn’t mean the responsibilities for owning one are small, too. Still think a Teacup Yorkie puppy is right for you? Here is what is in store:

1. They are INCREDIBLY fragile as puppies…and as adults

Teacup Yorkie ADULTS are only between two to four pounds. Teacup Yorkie puppies have the word “Teacup” in their name for a reason. They. Are. Tiny. You will literally have to watch your step with a Teacup Yorkie, because even an accidental step on them can lead to serious injuries; it can even be fatal. While getting a tiny pup for your kids may seem like a cute idea, it can be a bad one. Larger pets can also be an issue, so a Teacup Yorkie Puppy may be best in a one-pet home with either just adults or adolescent and older children.

2. Their size doesn’t stop them

Like most tiny pups, the Teacup Yorkie puppy doesn’t seem to realize he is only a whopping two pounds. Teacup Yorkies aren’t their own breed; in fact, the AKC doesn’t recognize the Teacup Yorkie at all. Teacup Yorkshire Terriers are actually plain ole Yorkshire Terriers that are really, really small. They are inquisitive, a bit stubborn, and enjoy exploring and activity.

3. They can come with a lot of health issues

Teacup puppies are very trendy, and thus many breeders are rushing to produce as many as they can. Overbreeding can lead to health issues with any dog. If you combine that with the fact that Teacup Yorkshire Puppies are essentially runts of the litter (who can also be prone to health issues), and you may have vet bills stacking up quickly.

If you are considering a Teacup Yorkshire Puppy, really research your breeder to make sure you aren’t supporting an inhumane practice. Be wary of any breeder who sells themselves as a “Teacup” Yorkie expert, because again, the Teacup Yorkie isn’t technically a breed, and there is a good chance they are exponentially jacking up their prices for a dog they claim is its own breed (it’s not) that could also have serious health issues from the start.

4. They will have a strict feeding schedule

Due to their tiny stature, feeding can also be demanding with Teacup Yorkshire puppies. Their small size makes them unable to store as much fat or eat as much food as a dog that is ten pounds or more. Depending on individual needs, you will need to feed your Teacup Yorkshire Terrier puppy a small amount once every two to four hours. This also means that potty breaks will be more frequent.

5. All of the effort will be worth it

If you do your research with breeders (or rescues!), have the time and right home setting, and are ready to take a lot of potty breaks, owning a Teacup Yorkie puppy can be extremely rewarding. They will love you to the moon and back, make your Instagram followers go up by a thousand after just posting one photo of them, and bring a mindfulness to your life. You will have to always be present with a Teacup Yorkie puppy, because their little bodies have huge needs.
