Roger Goodell welcomes Vick back early

Roger Goodell welcomes Vick back early

Why the early reinstatement? According to Goodell, Vick is "making real progress." I assume he's talking about on the football field, as I haven't seen much progress when it comes to Vick's promise to "help more dogs than [he's] hurt." Well, "progress," "growth," and all those other words that connote redemption are subjective, I suppose.

But Vick isn't the only one who's got moves. Commissioner Goodell made his announcement in a classic, fly-this-under-the-radar sort of way. It comes the Friday before Labor Day when most people are thinking about the long weekend, and many have already begun their vacation.

Apparently when no one is looking, it's much easier to do what you want. (Not that Goodell is the first person in the NFL to think that way.) But the fact is, we are looking. Our eyes as a nation, as sports fans and as humane beings, have been opened. We're not about to pretend we don't see.

As the season progresses, let's hope this story becomes less about Michael Vick's every move and what his performance means for the Eagles and the NFL. Let's hope the focus shifts to something important: Recognizing for ourselves, and teaching the next generation, that how we treat those we share this planet with matters.

Do you agree with Goodell's decision? Post your reaction below.

Doo_thumbnailI am so sick and tired of hearing "he did his time let it go" crap. First of all, boo hoo he had to pay $900,000 some odd dollars, how many more millions does he have, and will recieve as a result of Goodell letting him back in the games? He DIDN'T do his time. He did 18 out of 23 months for rackettering, and he didn't get ANYTHING at all for the animal cruelty charge, and yet, some of you people act like it's no big deal and does not effect the game. But it does. I can't and won't watch the Eagles play because of him. They are going to lose alot of money because of him. But as long as theres sickos out there who think what he did isn't that big a deal he will remain in the public eye for not only us, but our children to see as well. Roll model? My children will never be like him. What if the did what he did to humans? Would you still feel that way and say let him play? Ofcourse not. All of you that are backing him and saying let him play disgust me. You are hypocrites. Just because its a dog does not mean it does not feel pain or emotions. RAPE STAND...say it. That word and image strikes pure terror in my heart and mind, and the poor females that had to endure that, my heart breaks for them. (Sweet Jasmine to this day does not let anyone come up from behind her, now imagine it was a 16 year old girl) If you wouldn't do it to a human, why the hell would you do it to a dog? Or any living thing for that matter. The point is is that he did NOT do his time, he got off way to easily, he's NOT sorry because if he didn't get caught he'd still be doing it, and anyone in the public sector would never have gotten their job back. It's rediculous that all these people who play professional sports are always given special treatment when they do something wrong. They are supposed to be role models for children, and by letting that sociopath back into the game, Goodell has shown that it's ok to do whatever you like, with bare consequences, as long as you have a talent and can make a profit. Absolutely disgusting. Also, why are people saying, stop talking about it and protesting won't help? Banninng him won't stop it from happening, etc etc. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Sure let's just keep quiet and not say anything...that's as bad as ignoring the problem. To me, that is iggnorence speaking volumes. People need to see how truely evil his actions were. Are people so afraid to stand up and fight for what's right? Spreading the word WILL help make others more aware of what happens all the time, and if they see signs of it (because of people spreading the word) they will report it. It makes the whole community aware of the hrorrors that occure every day, and sitting by and keeping your mouth shut about it is taking the cowards way out. Putting a face to the atrocity will help people understand that things like this don't just happen in poor cities and back countries. People with money and power do it as well. And it's sickening. I will not ignore the problem, I will not sit in silence. Those dogs, and countless others did not ask to be brought into this world. They only ask for love, and in return Vick made them into killing machines, bait, or in the case of the females (especially sweet jasmine) puppy factories. And that's putting what he did nciely. There are no words for how awful what he did really is. Those of you who say let it go need to do your research. Look at what he did to those dogs, read the articles, look at the pictures, watch the vids, then come back and tell me he did his time. Vick will have to answer to God for what he did. He may have gotten off easy this time, and he may have been able to get his multi million dollar contract back, but in the end, God will give him the punishment he deserves. That's karma, and Vick better pray as hard as he can for his soul. ” — Nickola, Sep 16 2009

Honeyharry_014_thumbnailI watched Michael Vick on 60 Minutes a couple of weeks ago and tried to keep an open mind. Oh he said all the right things. He’s sorry. He’s learned. His actions will speak louder than his words. Uh huh. Well, sure Michael is sorry—sorry he got caught.

Michael Vick was a young man with everything! He had talent, good looks, plenty of money—and what did he do with it? Michael was in a position to be a wonderful athletic role model for a whole generation of kids who need somebody to look up to. There is no excuse that would change the fact that he did heinous and unforgivable acts. Now, he’s pandering to anyone who will listen (along with his highly paid entourage of public relations folks and image consultants) to have us believe he’s a changed man.

Michael Vick personally and physically killed dogs. He watched as dogs were slaughtered. We are not talking about some poor fifteen-year-old ignorant kid who didn’t know any better. We are talking about a man who did know better. We are not talking about someone who went to a dogfight one time and placed a bet. We are talking about a crude and ugly and impossible to defend dog-fighting ring. Only a monster would abuse an animal who can’t fight back.

Now we are being told he deserves a second chance. Why? Those dogs didn’t get a second chance. Michael Vick wants to return to the spotlight and regain what he lost, the fame, the fortune, and the good name. Sorry. Not in my book. One of my dogs (Honey, a German Shepherd–pit bull mix) has chewed the arm off her Michael Vick dog toy. My other dog, Harry, (a Lab–pit bull mix) has chewed off half of his leg. I couldn’t agree more.

I love football too much to have it fouled by this person. Michael Vick did his prison time, but now I want him to disappear from public life. He doesn’t deserve acclaim for his athletic accomplishments.” — Linda, Sep 12 2009

AvatarWow! What a subject.......is there a side too choose? Our society makes the laws to allow some offenders of rules and laws to enter back in that society. The man is back and I could careless if he can throw a football 80 yards! But if he can contribute to the welfare of the animal/pets his actions abused (should be stronger) I am in his corner. joe www.woofwoofroofs.com” — joe, Sep 12 2009
