New to rescue on 9/21/09 from a north-eastern Ohio shelter.
Grace is being fostered in Rittman, Ohio.
After 2 weeks of being there, this female dog was finally reported hanging around a State Route in Wayne Co OH. The caller stated they thought she'd go home or at least get hit by a car. Well, she didn't get hit by a car, but a vet has confirmed she was hit or kicked with something on her left eye. Her eye was protruding out of her skull and bleeding for at least 3 days before the Dog Warden was notified. She immediately received emergency care to hopefully save her eye & is currently getting the vet care she needs through our rescue, even though her hold is not over until 9/21/09.
Update 9/21/09: Amazing Grace's stray hold is over, she is now a part of our rescue. She was seen by our vet again today and he is please with her eye progress. He is hopeful she will keep her eye since the bleeding has stopped and the swelling is down. Grace is around 5-6 years old (please note age update below), heartworm negative, and is only 32#, she should be closer to 40#. We will get her vaccinated, but her spay will wait until she heals from this traumatic injury.
We are amazed at Grace's willingness to still trust people and everyone who meets her comments on her temperment. She adores my children, is crate trained, seems housebroken, knows 'sit', 'down', 'shake', sniffed the cat, jumps right in the SUV for rides, and is good with new dogs as long as they are respectful. Grace likes to play with the other dogs & meet new people, even though her eye is painful and doesn't have full vision. We have confirmed Amazing Grace is deaf, which just makes her story all the more amazing. This sweet ACDx came to our doorstep for a reason and we will enjoy her thoroughly until her perfect home is found! Pictures of her eye can be seen at www.cowdogrescue.com - beware it is graphic.
Update 10/3/09: Grace had her weekly eye exam. She is still having bleeding upon exercise and strain on her eye, when she pulls on the leash. She will be walked with a harness and exercise kept to a minimum. Her eye looks good externally, but her progress is guarded. Our vet feels in a month we will know if Grace will have a viable eye, or if it will need to be removed. Her spay will be done on 10/28 and her ear drums will be examined at that time too. With such a traumatic injury to her eye, we want to rule out injured ear drums too. Grace is being fostered in Rittman, OH with 2 German Shepherd dogs, who she adores. You are welcome to meet her now with an approved application. A deposit will hold her until she is ready to go home.
UPDATE 11/1/09: Our vet has confirmed Grace has a spay scar & we have blood work that states she is indeed spayed. She had an internal ear exam and they are perfectly fine, she's been deaf since birth. We had a dental done on her also, since her teeth were so horrid. Too our surprise she has pearly white teeth and our vet is now aging her at 2-3 years of age! Grace's eye has healed, but it will remain sightless. It is a healthy eye, so our vet has recommended not to have it removed. She will need a simple eye drop, once daily, for the rest of her life to help insure her eye stays healthy. Even with her disabilities, this girl is one Amazing dog. She continues to make human and animal friends with everyone she meets. She adores cats and will groom them if given the chance. Grace goes to work with her foster Mom and interacts with up to 10 dogs at a time. Everyone there just adores her. She loves to travel and just be with her person. We will require a fenced in yard for Grace, due to the fact she will wander off if out of a fenced in area. Grace would make an amazing therapy dog. One meeting with her and you will know why everyone continues to call her Amazing Grace!
If interested please fill out an adoption application as this is the first step to the adoption process. We also do a telephone interview, check references, and home visits. A contract and adoption fee applies. Our adoption fee is $200. All our foster dogs are altered, heartworm tested and kept on prevention, had age appropiate shots, fecal tests, are micro-chipped, and are kept on a premium food.
