Crockett is a Tennessee Treeing Walker Coonhound. While some people believe the name Tree Walker indicates that these dogs climb trees, the name reflects the hound?s ability to quickly find, chase and tree prey (raccoons, etc.). The Walker part is for a famous breeder named Walker who helped develop the breed. Crockett is a loving, sweet and gentle dog who wants to be with you, but wants you to be active as well. He lives for morning, afternoon and evening runs and needs to find a family with a big yard and a big heart who will give him the large amounts of love and attention that have been missing in his life. He will amply repay your love by being a devoted family dog. Consistent and disciplined training are the keys to this dog being a great addition to your family. He would not do well in a small house or in a single-person home.
He appears to be 2+ years old and is fixed. He has basic housebreaking and crate training and is quickly catching on to ?come? and ?sit? commands. He is highly, highly intelligent and inquisitive. He quickly learned how to open doors in our house and even figured out how to open the cabinet drawer where we keep the dog food.
Before you meet Crockett and fall in love with him (and you will) ? you need to better understand the breed. This is a working hound. That means he likes to have a job and to do that job every day. He likes to lay in the sun as much as the next dog, but he isn?t the lazy, porch-staying dog from the movies. He is an active hound who likes to go places and do things. He needs at least one long daily walk and tasks that test his intelligence (finding dog toys on command, carrying items to and from the house, etc.). Keep his mind engaged and he?ll be a happy camper.
