Meet Dexter (formerly Edmond)! He has an AMAZING story of survival and all he needs now if a home of his very own to finish off his happy ending! Dexter was left on Galveston island to survive on his own during Hurricane Ike!! Amazingly, he survived, enduring more than just the storm...its a miracle he is alive today but this amazing boy has a zest for life that will win your heart!
Dexter is a big favorite of our surgery staff. He was found after the hurricane with a septic snake bite in his leg, which was extremely swollen and painful. The doctors tell me that he almost died on the table, but managed to pull through and has recovered completely. They seem to think that it’s some kind of miracle -- we all know that it was a miracle and that Dexter was destined for a second chance at life, he definitely had an angel in his corner.
What I think is more amazing is that Dexter is an adolescent male with such a wonderful personality. He is definitely one of the top 3 of this group (in terms of sociability, lower arousal, tolerance of handling/restraint, confidence in different situations) (this is the tiny group of pit bulls that was picked by a local shelter to be put up for adoptions - he was only one of 9 chosen to be put up for adoption out of thousands to tell you how very special he is). He is extremely social and relatively low key, approaching everyone he meets with a wiggling body, ears back social greeting. The surgery staff, who have had him in their ward for a week, claim that he is religiously housebroken.
He does get excited and jump up a few times when reunited after being left alone. He settles down within a minute after being reunited. I’ve left him in our evaluation room with the video baby monitor on and he did stand by the door and jump up on it twice, though he was not destructive and the garbage can and our evaluation cart remained unscathed.
As far as how he responds to other dogs, Dexter has proven to be non-reactive to a number of dogs, even when the dog is growling and barking at him. He currently lives with a couple of other female dogs and does great!! He is also fabulous with kids, even little kids. No cats for this boy though - he loves to play and is just too rough for them.
