Buster is a 2 year old, 70 pound American bulldog mix who was wandering my neighborhood this summer. After feeding him for a while, he learned to trust me and he eventually followed me into my backyard one day in early Sept while I
was walking my dog. I tried to find his owner, checked local vets etc and got nowhere with any of that.
After contacting a number of rescue agencies which all were full and couldn't take him, a member of the EARS rescue organization stopped by, did a temperment assessment and
deemed him adoptable/placeable. My husband and I then decided to take care of him until we could find him a suitable home. That hasn't happened yet.
During this time, he has been seen by the vet, given a good bill of health and is heartworm negative. He has been
vaccinated, neutered and is on heartworm prevention.
Initially he was afraid of both me and my husband but he quickly warmed up to me. I believe that he must have been mistreated by a dark-haired male because he still is slightly apprehensive around my husband. He has warmed up quite well to my male neighbors who happen to be bald and/or lighter haired, though. He also has warmed up to various people in the neighborhood that we come across during our walks...he always warms up to women more quickly.
The only command he followed when we found him was 'sit'. We have been working on 'down' and 'stay' and he has made some progress with those. We are also working on 'fetch' and although he will retrieve objects and bring them towards me, he hasn't
yet made the connection that he should bring them to me. He is a smart dog and loves any and all attention he can get.
With some more time, he will figure these things out. He is walking pretty well on the leash, too. Even though he needs a bit of work, I think he will learn quickly with the proper attention and guidance. The hardest thing for me at this point is that he gets so excited when he sees me that he jumps up at me whenever I initially greet him. He does not do this to anyone else at this point. Only me. I am working with him to discourage this but haven't been successful thus far. He just needs time and proper training to learn to contain his excitement. After he has greeted me
with jumps and licks, he quickly settles down. He has lots of energy and loves to run in the yard but he
> also will sit at my feet for long periods of time while I work at the computer. He certainly needs exercise but can be calm while in the house. He seems to be house trained.
I say 'seems to be' because I am not able to let him roam freely in the house secondary to having a baby crawling around. He loves playing with her/ licking her and I have
> no concern that he might harm her. He is just a large dog with lots of energy and I feel more in control of him having him in my sight at all times. He sleeps in the house at
night and has never gone to the bathroom in the house during
the night.
He has NEVER shown any signs of aggression. While roaming
in the neighborhood, he would follow every person who was walking a dog in an attempt to play with the dogs. He has been playing with my 20 pound schnauzer mix since we took
him in and they have become great pals. My dog will nip at his ears/ ankles and jump on him and he doesn't mind at all. He has not shown any signs of food aggression. I can put my hand in his bowl at any time and take anything out of his mouth without a problem. When I first took him in, he
had a friend with him ( I found a great home for her a while ago) anyway, he would share his bowl with her without a problem from the day I first started feeding them.
