Consider becoming a foster parent for a dog in need!

Fostering is a big commitment, but it is a very rewarding experience, one that you will never forget. We are willing to answer any/all questions for you before you are ready to commit, but it is a huge responsibility, not to be taken lightly. We often find that our fosters either stay fosters with us, or eventually adopt their foster dog, which is why we need more fosters! =)

We provide our fosters with food, crate, leash, collar and ID tag, and we pay all medical expenses for your foster dog or cat. The foster/caregiver provides the warm house, some basic training, and lots of love.

This is how fostering works:

You complete a foster application and we will then schedule a home visit where a volunteer will come to your house and sit and talk with you and go over our procedures and answer any questions you may have at that time. We will also provide you with a foster binder with any/all information and important facts and phone numbers that you will need. The binder is also filled with training tips! You will have a few days/weeks to look this over and if you have any additional questions at that time you can contact us. During this home visit we will get a chance to meet all the members of your family, including your furry friends. This will help us to make an informed decision as to which fosters will be a good match for you should you decide to foster an animal in need.

Basically, we try to find the best possible foster match for your household. When a dog comes into our program, he/she spends a few days at a board member's house for an evaluation/quarantine period. This is where a good bathing happens, a nail clipping happens, he/she is wormed, flea treated, ears are cleaned, and taken to the vets if necessary or if already hasnsn't been to the vets. Then it is determined where the dog will be placed in foster according to the dog's needs and the fosters that are available. Off to foster he/she goes! We supply the crate, food, leash, collar, ID tag, and we pay the vet bills and we even send them with some toys and treats to get them started.

The only thing we ask of the fosters is their time. Time to work with the foster dogs on possibly housetraining, teaching them manners, and of course, showing them love. We also ask that the fosters give us their time and be involved in the adoption process and help us with the home visits for their fosters. (don't worry, we'll be here to help you with all of that! We have a really strong support system in place, which is how you will make friends!) and to transport their fosters to the vets if they need to get there, or to help on occassion to get other fosters and their dogs to the vets if need be. We also have monthly adoption events and if you can make it to that it would be wonderful (but not necessary) We like to work as one big team!

These dogs need you! There are dogs dying in shelters right now, that we could have transported to us- if only we had a foster to place them with. We have the adopters- now we just need the fosters.

Could that be you?

Can't foster but want to support those that do?
We need donations! We need the following items immediately: dry dog food, canned dog food, dog crates (large or extra large), blankets or towels, dog kennel or dog run (the chain link fence type), leashes, collars, papertowels and newspapers.

All donations may be done through the button on this page, or may be mailed. All donations will be used for the rescued pets. All donation funds from the public go towards supplies/food for the animals and vet bills. (advertising costs, website upkeep, and other non-medical/animal related misc. costs are all paid out of pocket, by board member donations)
If you would like to mail a donation, checks may be made out to: Black Dog, Second Chance and may be sent to: PO Box 626, East Amherst, NY 14051

***The black dog in the first photo is Maddie, she was in our rescue several months ago, and has since been adopted. She is no longer available for adoption.
