With humans, you can set out a tray of appetizers and know that only the most shameless of guests will plant himself beside it, scarfing up all the shrimp cocktail before others have a chance to approach the table. And even then, he’ll try to be sly about it.
Canines, on the whole, are much less self-conscious. They beeline straight for the snacks as soon as their noses say go, so it’s best to keep the hors d’oeuvres on high tables and allow owners to monitor intake.
This recipe is a Fido favorite:
Fancy Lady Finger Cookies
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cups powdered milk
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp brown sugar
6 tbsp margarine
1/2 cup cold water
Directions: Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease a cookie sheet. Combine flour, powdered milk, and sugar. Gradually add margarine until mixture resembles corn meal. Mix in egg and enough water so that mixture forms a ball. Pat dough into a half-inch thick sheet and cut into cigar (or finger) shapes. Place on cookie sheet and bake 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from tray and cool on rack.
Accompaniments for people guests: While the hounds are enjoying their nibbles, serve up any one of the lovely selections from Dog House vintners. Or, subscribe to the Humane Society of the United States’ wine lovers club, and share your favorite labels.
