Lifelong dog lovers will tell you that every dog is unique. They have personalities, likes, dislikes, ticks, habits and quirks that make each pooch extraordinary. So how do all these special pups become exceptional little standouts?

Psychology Today tells us that humans tend to pick dogs that look like them, and studies show that the similarities go deeper than just looks. We humans also tend to be drawn to dogs that have similar personalities and characteristics similar to our own.

It makes sense that a shy person might be drawn to a quiet, gentle pup, while an outgoing person may prefer an active, outgoing dog who jumps up to greet everyone who walks in the door. The world is full of characters–both human and canine.

According to Psychology Today, our pets also tend to take on many characteristics of their humans because they are pack animals and want to fit into the family, so they tend to do as the family does. If you’re a wild daredevil who loves skateboarding and surfing, you may find yourself with a rowdy, madcap pup who also seeks intense adventure. If you’re a bookworm who likes to curl up on the sofa with a good book, you may look down and notice your gentle little pooch is curled up right there by your side, enjoying the serenity of the moment.

Just like children, our dogs have a “watch and learn” approach to life. They naturally mimic their family members. This isn’t just a theory, there is actual scientific evidence and studies to back it up.
