Clothing your dog in a sweater or jacket isn't as frivolous as it sounds. In cold weather, the extra layer can bring huge comfort to certain types of dogs. The dogs most likely to benefit include the small ones, particularly those weighing less than 10 pounds, and the larger ones with very short fur or low body fat, such as Pit Bull Terriers, Greyhounds, and Whippets. Small dogs lose body heat more quickly than big dogs because they have less fat and a smaller ratio of body surface area to total body weight. Some geriatrics and sick dogs on the mend will also appreciate the warmth on a cold day. In short, for these dogs the basic rule of thumb is that if you're cold enough to need a sweater outside, they will too. Feel silly? Get over it. Here are a eight stylish ways to wrap your dog in warmth.
