I got a 9 week old puppy, and he’s really lazy. He likes to sleep alot. He will play, but only for about 20 minutes, and then he’ll sleep for a while. Is this normal? He’s also got really bad separation anxiety… any suggestions? |

He’s only 9 weeks old; imagine he is like a human baby younger than a year old. He needs to sleep a lot and he doesn’t like to be away from his Mommy (or Daddy). At his age, many puppies are still with Mom :) Enjoy this time, he will become more active with time :) |

His energy level sounds normal. Puppies need to sleep about 18 – 20 hours each day. Don’t worry, he’ll grow out of it, enjoy it while you can! Plus all of this sleep makes house and crate training that much easier. |

Most likely it is not separation anxiety but normal puppy vocalizations over being left alone. Pups are hardwired to cry when left alone because at this age if they were lost and left by themselves they wouldn’t survive. http://openpaw.org/Pet_Basics/separation.html Your job is to teach your puppy that it is okay to be alone. Teach him to actually like it and that he is safe. Here are some resources: http://openpaw.org/Pet_Basics/alone.html |
