My husband and I just got married and are looking for a dog. I am really interested in getting a beagle. I have heard that they may get separation anxiety or get bored easily. We both work full time jobs but are home throughout the day. Any beagle owners have any opinions or ideas on how to keep them occupied? |

Any breed who is not given proper exercise and discipline will become bored an dfrustrated. Having a regular exercise or walk routine can help. Also, entering them in some obedience, agility or other types of clases can help. It is a great way to bond with the dog, build their confidence. A well exercised dog is a happy dog who will not have time to become destructive or bored. |

One of my 3 beagles has separation anxiety but I believe it is largely due to the fact that he was “given up” by two prevous owners – the last at the age of 9 – we don’t know why but he’s turned out to be the best and smartest of the three. As long as he gets to play with his pack buddies, go for walks and snif to his heart’s content, he seems happy. He still howls when we leave, but I noticed if I stay quiet and listen he stops after about 5-10 minutes. I’ve heard it recommended that it’s a good idea to get at least two since beagles identify closely with the pack. I must say that having 3 allows the boys to play with each other and wear each other out. The now 10 year old still likes to play with stuffed squeaky toys (over plain latex) and wrestles with/chases his brothers around the house. Check out shelters, BREW or the beagle rescue groups for a great new family friend. Prepare for a dog that wants to follow his nose and tell you about everything they smell with a beautiful beagle bugle/bay. |
