Just wondering if there are any basset people here?

I’m new to this site and was delighted to find someone looking for basset hound people. I have an 11 year old basset hound named Shug who is my faithful companion and quite a clown. Just watch out for your food!

We have one basset (possibly beagle mix also) who is a rescue by the name of Beauregard and one young female show girl named Roxie. They are both lovable cuddle bugs and the biggest clows you’ve ever met. Food is always something to keep an eye on as they can sniff it out from a mile away.

We have a 3 year old female basset hound/beagle mix.
We adopted her about 4 months ago.
She’s very sweet and lovable and gets along great with our black lab and 3 cats.
She can be very stubborn and tends to whine when she’s by herself.
If one of us leaves the room, she immediately gets up and follows(even if she’s asleep).
Her bark(howl) is also so loud it can make you jump.
She originally came from Indianna and was always outside, so maybe she was lonely.
Any ideas for training?
She loves her food and could eat all day!

philipandjoanne,
Bassets are great dogs. So loveable and mild mannered. My basset, loves all other dogs, although all other dogs don’t necessarily love him! Dont let your basset over eat. Their joints and long back can’t take the stress. Flounder (my basset) only gets about 2 and a half cups of food a day in the winter, and a little more in the summer when he is more active outside with us. Positive reinforement seems to work the best with our basset. He’s a lot like my kids, he gets selective hearing and really stubborn. Cheese bits are his favorite! There isn’t much he won’t do for cheddar!

Philip and Joanne,
Tcshubert is right bassets are a fantastic breed. We have a bagel (beagle basset mix) as well and he was a bid difficult to train and tends to be a barker, but with a little persistence and positive reinforcement he trained over time. The barking I tend to try and stop before it starts as he has a little grumble he does before it starts and I try to stop it at that point. Our boy and our previous girl also had separation anxiety and would bark when left alone but if they were kenneled in an area with the other then they felt safe and did not bark. The food is also and issue with bassets as they tend to get overweight if not watched. Make sure you are portioning out their food and be careful not to give too many treats. Extra weight on them can lead to a myraid of health problems that you don’t want to subject them to. Enjoy your girl, they are wonderfully loving dogs and quite the little comics when you are down.

My 4 yr old female basset is a doll. She only wants to cuddle and sun bathe. Unlike most bassets, she rarely makes a sound. Until I try to trim her nails! Then you would think I was going to cut her leg off. So far, I have had to take her in to have it done. She refuses to let me do it. Any suggestions?

Good luck, most bassets I know don’t care for it. I think it may have something to do with their dwarfed legs and not wanting them pulled. Our’s are ok with the dremel but sometimes they get fussy with that as well. Our boy screams bloody murder when we are doing it with the clippers.
