I recently got introduced to Bassets when my husband brought a male home that had been abandoned at a truck stop. He thought he might get along with our other dogs. Well, I say very sadly that our 16 lb. male Boston Terrier wanted to KILL the 46 pound Basset due to jealously.
It makes us extremely sad that we cannot keep this wonderful Basset. He is so affectionate and vocal in a ‘talk to me’ type of speech. He just wants to be loved and to love and have a forever home. He is about 1 1/2 yrs old & a doll. csebastmortenson@aol.com

Oh, that’s so tragic. It’s always smart to introduce dogs before you bring a new one home, but I realize you were trying to do the right thing in rescuing one that was abandoned. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out, good luck finding him a home. Bassets truly are exceptionally loving dogs.

My wife and I have three dogs of our own and also foster dogs for various shelters in our area, so we’ve a good deal of experience in bringing new dogs into our home. And I don’t think you should give up on your basset yet. Sometimes it takes a week or so for the dogs to adjust to one another and to figure out their roles vis-a-vis one another and their humans. But generally, they will figure it out if you give them a bit of time … and keep an eye on them to ensure that things don’t escalate.

Our first dog (a male mutt named Rocky) was pretty unhappy when we brought home a rescued female Australian shepherd. At first Rocky would not let her have any toys, bones, etc., and would not allow her to enjoy much attention from my wife. (It was his territory and his stuff, right?) But over time, they grew to play together and share and now they love one another like brother and sister.

Be patient, and let them figure it out! So long as neither dog has any serious behavioral issues, they could become best buds with a bit of time!

I agree with the last poster, it may need a bit more time. However if you have given it that and it still does not work out then contact your local basset rescue and they will be able to find a suitable home for him. It’s too bad though if it doesn’t work out as I think bassets are one of the most loving breeds you’ll ever know. However I’m a little partial since I own them. Not that I don’t love all the other breeds as well but bassets have a special place in my heart.
