I recently got introduced to Bassets when my husband brought a male home that had been abandoned at a truck stop. He thought he might get along with our other dogs. Well, I say very sadly that our 16 lb. male Boston Terrier wanted to KILL the 46 pound Basset due to jealously. |

Oh, that’s so tragic. It’s always smart to introduce dogs before you bring a new one home, but I realize you were trying to do the right thing in rescuing one that was abandoned. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out, good luck finding him a home. Bassets truly are exceptionally loving dogs. |

My wife and I have three dogs of our own and also foster dogs for various shelters in our area, so we’ve a good deal of experience in bringing new dogs into our home. And I don’t think you should give up on your basset yet. Sometimes it takes a week or so for the dogs to adjust to one another and to figure out their roles vis-a-vis one another and their humans. But generally, they will figure it out if you give them a bit of time … and keep an eye on them to ensure that things don’t escalate. |

I agree with the last poster, it may need a bit more time. However if you have given it that and it still does not work out then contact your local basset rescue and they will be able to find a suitable home for him. It’s too bad though if it doesn’t work out as I think bassets are one of the most loving breeds you’ll ever know. However I’m a little partial since I own them. Not that I don’t love all the other breeds as well but bassets have a special place in my heart. |
