Hello everyone, I have a 10-11month old Western White Highland Terrier and we’ve been feeding her California Natural Lamb and Rice formula, Puppy formula because the breeder we got her from fed them that and said she had good sucsess with it. My dog likes it and I don’t have any complaints. My question is when do I switch over to an adult formula? Another question is that we’ve been hitting triple digit tempature here in Oklahoma and my dog wasn’t eating her two meals a day which I’m guessing was because of the heat outside so then we started feeding her once a day (lunch time) and she of course always eats it up. Is that necessarily a bad thing to feed her once a day when it is hot outside? She was an outdoor dog that we kennel outside but also put her in her cage inside when it gets really hot (mid afternoon). Now she’s an indoor dog. Got her house trained and everything.

It depends on who you talk to, but I see no problem with feeding her just once a day. She probably isn’t eating as much because of the extreme heat. My vet recomends switching to adult food once your pet has been spayed or neutered because it changes the dog’s metabolism.

I would leave he ron puppy food until she is a year old then switch her over to the same brand adult food. When you start to switcher her, don’t just stop one food and start the next. Even though it’s the same brand it’s a different formula and can up set her stomach. I don’t know how much she eats, so I’ll use 1 cup as an example. When you start the switch, the first day give 3/4 cup puppy food and 1/4 cup adult food mixed together for a couple of days, then give her 1/2 cup puppy 1/2 cup adult for a couple of days, etc until she is eating just the adult food. If you switch her food gradually like this it prevents her from getting diarrhea, which is common when dogs foods are switched.

You should start putting a little bit of the adult formula mixed in with the puppy formula. then slowly take away the puppy formula so theres only adult left.
