I wish everyone would do a little research before stating what foods are “good”.
Do an “ask.com” search, “What is wrong with dog food”
A good site to read is www.auntjeni.com/Whatwrng.htm
I think you will be unpleasantly surprised by what you learn here.

I nearly lost my 9 mo old Yellow Lab to Hills Science Diet Prescription food. He refused to eat, and they literally jammed it down his throat with a syringe. The Vet had no idea what to try next, and sent him for me to try and fix. I started cooking meats and veggies for him. Many prefer a raw diet, but I wasen’t ready for that yet. The end result? He’s gained back the 10 lbs he lost at the Vet’s, and is doing great! Please, read up on this topic!

I find it a little difficult to believe that so many of the pet food products out on the market are that harmful to dogs. It seems the website your referred to is more of an advertising site for their particular natural foods. This site here http://dogtime.com/food-nutrition.html lists some guidelines for picking out pet foods.

I see a lot of websites about the raw food diet. Why is it better for a dog? Is it more expensive?

The only thing I like about Science Diet is their oral care food. My cats teeth were very dirty. I could not brush them, so I bought him it and it cleaned his teeth.

Hi,

I found an article here about the dangers of raw food diet. You might want to check this out.

As long as you practice safe handling practices as one would when preparing meat for ourselves salmonella is rare. Dogs digestive systems and saliva are much different then ours. I know tons of raw feeders, including vets, and nutrionists who have no issues with salmonella. Not to mention that even dogs who eat kibble can pass salmonella in their stool.

Here is another formula that you might want to check out: sorry it’s so long. I don’t raw feed so this works for me.

How to grade your dog’s food:
Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of “by-product”, subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source (“meat” or “poultry”, meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain “mill run” or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. “ground brown rice”, “brewerâ⬢?s rice”, “rice flour” are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnâ⬢?t allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnâ⬢?t allergic to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count “chicken” and “chicken meal” as only one protein source, but “chicken” and ”” as 2 different sources), add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

I HAVE A 7 MONTH OLD COCKER SPANIEL AND IS A FINIKY EATER, I RECENTLY CHANGED HER FOOD FROM IAM’S TO NATURAL PLANET ORGANIC FOODS, BUT I RECENTLY CAME ACROSS YOUR SITE AND DONT SEE THE FOOD ON YOUR FOOD LIST FOR BEING ONE OF THE BETTER FOODS, IS IT A “BETTER” QUALITY FOOD OR SHOULD I CONSIDER SOMETHING BETTER FOR HER. THANKS

One of the great things about dogs is that they need the same nutrients we do, which means they can eat most of the same foods we do.

Very Nice post Drieber. I don’t care for the Dogtime description as it doesn’t even address the fact that most of the major manufacturers of dog foods use only by-products as their meat sources. There is another non-biased source you can check called Petsumer report. They go through and review various dog foods and tell you whether or not they have any potentially harmful ingredients. This is especially important in light of all the recalls not long ago and a great deal of these companies are continuing to import ingredients from the same places as they got them from. Always know what your dogs are eating as it is their best way to keep them healthy.

All I can say is be sure that your dog food is USDA Certified Organic, is produced in the US by a manufacturer that manufactures human grade food and stay away from certain grains. I feed Ginger Fromm food only. She really likes the Duck and Sweet Potatoe or the Surf and Turf. Fromm also addes a vitamin and mineral supplement for dogs. I would expect nothing less from the company that pioneered the first canine distemper vaccine in 1949. Fromm is a family owned business. www.frommfamily.com/ I have tried other foods and nothing compares to the quality of the Fromm foods.

Here is a website that will tell you all you need to know about kibble and the ingredients. This website was helpful to me when I was feeding kibble. I don’t feed kibble anymore, I feed prey model raw.

Jennifer, you are right Fromm is a great food. However if you are ever concerned about the price, there is also another food by one of the men from Fromm and it’s callen American Natural Premium. It retails for significantly less than Fromm as it is not advertised but if your store can get Fromm they can get this too as it is made at the same plant and from the same company. It retails for about $25ish for a 40# bag and it is the same quality ingredients used in Fromm.

I just want to tell everyone what I feed my 12 year old pit bull. I feed him rice, chicken, carrots, peas, kale, or sometimes broccoli, echinecea purpurea for the immune system, milk thistle capsules for the liver, dried beet pulp powder (sugar removed), for normal stool, dried yeast flakes for nutrient absorption. Sometimes I feed my dog beef instead of chicken or potatoes instead of rice, I kinda alternate the food I feed my dog, it depends on what I’m eating that night (to keep the cost down). I do give my dog calcium and phosphate vitamin supplements because I do feed my dog home cooked meals. I joined the healthy dog team back in the year 1999. Now they have a website at www.healthydogexperts.org The website was made by the owner of the company who had taken his laptop and his dog up to the mountains to make this website, and I think it is cheesy, but my dog is healthier than most dogs we come across and that is what counts. If you read the about us page it will tell a little bit more about them.
