My husband & I recently got a 2 yr, old long-haired chihuahua and we were told that he needed to eat Purina One puppy chow so we bought a bag & he won’t touch it. They said that they also feed him table scrapes mostly. We finally bought some moist and meaty bag dog food and he ate it twice after a lot and I mean a lot of coaxing three days after the first time. We finally got him to eat a little bit of it a third time but then he throw it up a day later. He loves chicken so we bought him some chicken moist and meaty but he won’t eat it. We tried canned dog food once but it made his stool real soft. What can we do? I heard that those beneful meals don’t give them diarehha is that true? This is getting really expensive and we are ending up with a lot of unused dog food. If anyone can help us it would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

I would transition the dog from cooked to raw food. It sounds like he wont eat kibble so this makes it that much easier to switch over to the best food for him. He likes cooked food (table scraps) already, just improve the quality of his cooked food (mostly meat, little sat, etc). Feed him this for a week and then begin to cook the food less and less until raw. Please read up on raw, probably your dog’s best option. JMO.

If you can’t get your dog to eat dry food try putting gravy one it. I feed my dog,Lady, the a brand called Merrick.

I’d try calling my vet for suggestions first. I did find an interesting article regarding a raw food diet on this site. It’s on this page: http://dogtime.com/raw-food-diet-dangers-dogs-a…

You will find pros and cons to any diet. Your dog had already told you what he likes to eat…people food! There are some good recieps here to start. Then do a bit of online searching. You might look up “what’s wrong with dog food” and you will see why you should feed him home cooked or raw.

You ahve a small dog and it won’t be difficult at all to cook for him. I feed my Lab, chcken, ground turkey, eggs, cottage cheese, sweet potatoes, and some organ meats in a smaller proportion. I give him ground eggshells for Calcium, and a good quality salmon oil. There really isn’t anything difficult about this, and your dog shold start eating just fine.

Remember he will feel your stress. So b-r-e-a-t-h-e, and try and relax. If he doesn’t eat after 15 min or so, remove the food til his next meal. But try some cooked meat or good leftovers (not too much salt or additives)

Hi,

As more people understand the importance of nutrition to their own health, they’re starting to consider what’s in their dog’s food bowl as well. You might want to check this page which gives you guidelines on buying the right food for your dog.

Hope this helps.

Hello Bunny – Most of the off-the-shelf commercial dog foods are quite literally, garbage. They are based on the garbage that is left over from the human food coorporations. There is plenty of information on this on the internet, so I will not go into it in further detail here. We have been studying this topic for the past six years, as we have a company that balances the homemade dog diet. The best thing you can do for your new little family member is to just go ahead and feed raw or cooked meat. Of course over the long run, the diet MUST be balanced, for things such as a calcium source, but the thing to keep in mind is that you should stay ENTIRELY from commercial pet foods. If your dog is refusing to eat these foods, he must be a very smart little guy. Take a look at the info at Know Better Dog Food.

One of the great things about dogs is that they need the same nutrients we do, which means they can eat most of the same foods we do.

Read this http://www.nbc10.com/health/16301979/detail.html more people get sick from kibble.

There are some great groups and websites out there not ran by kibble companies for profit . I have 2 raw fed dogs and they are happy and very healthy. Also ask your vet how much money he get for selling you kibble hills is around 40% kick back just something to think about
